Urban Kiz is a dance style based on Kizomba. It has started in France just a couple of years ago. The “Kiz” refers to Kizomba and the “Urban” refers to other music and dance styles that are mixed into it: Hip Hop, R&B, Rap, house and ghetto zouk.
A few differences between Urban Kiz and Kizomba:
– Dance position is more open so the distance between the partners is bigger which allows more footwork.
– Leading is done mostly by the hands. In traditional Kizomba leading is done both by the hands and the arms as the position is tigheter.
– Movement is more linear, while in Kizomba the movement is more circular.
– More frequent breaks and syncopation
Here is a demonstration of the differences between the styles, first part of the dance is traditional Kizomba and the second is Urban Kiz.
Another example for Urban Kiz:
For now there are still no Urban Kiz courses in Hamburg as the scene is probably just too small but sometimes there are workshops offered.
